IMPACCT Brooklyn (IMPACCT) build links between Brooklyn’s historic community and its new arrivals, working proactively in the fight to minimize the effects of gentrification. Since our creation in 1964, IMPACCT has challenged displacement and growing inaccessibility in Brooklyn. During the past 55 years, we preserved historic buildings, redeveloped neglected properties, and invested in our community through tenant education and advocacy. With offices throughout the borough, we work on-the-ground within the communities we serve, expanding our longstanding commitment to Brooklyn’s growth and success. IMPACCT is driven by our goals for preservation, development, and accessibility of affordable housing; economic development of local commerce; support and opportunity for vulnerable members of the community; and community organizing to improve the welfare of tenants. We are at the forefront of this transformation, preserving Brooklyn’s character and history while allowing it the space necessary to evolve and grow - bridging that gap between gentrifiers and those affected by gentrification.
Affordable housing is foundational in preventing generational residents from being forced from their homes by surging rents and opportunistic landlords. IMPACCT developed more than 1,000 affordable units in collaboration with both public and private partnerships. One of the challenges of finding affordable housing is knowing where to start; when residents are at once faced with displacement, working long hours, and raising a family, little time and energy is left to seek out accessible housing options. IMPACCT relieves tenants of some of these pressures through our marketing partnerships with affordable housing developers. Our organization helps these developers reach qualified applicants, educates tenants about the availability of affordable housing, and helps applicants navigate the lottery process. IMPACCT also advocates for tenants and helps them stand up against landlord harassment, unsafe living conditions, and unfair evictions. In addition, we create tenant associations and oversee negotiations between these groups for repairs as well as adequate maintenance for their buildings.
We recognize that gentrification disproportionately affects populations who are already historically and systemically marginalized, like low-income residents, people of color, the homeless, and the elderly. We acknowledge that institutionalized racism, in particular, is inextricably linked to housing discrimination and inaccessibility, and we work proactively to address this inequity. Gentrification also accelerates exploitative practices from landlords as they attempt to make room for higher-income renters. It’s for this reason that we’re committed to empowering communities through case management, financial literacy workshops, and foreclosure prevention counseling, among other things. Preventing displacement enhances the community’s economic, racial, and cultural diversity. IMPACCT’s vision for the future is one that creates these kinds of links between Brooklyn’s residents - new and old, rich and poor. We aim to address the changing dynamics of the borough while maintaining the pursuit of justice and equality for all who live here.
