$30,000 Goal

Every gift to South Brooklyn Sanctuary is doubled, up to $30,000, through December 30.

South Brooklyn Sanctuary responds to a civil rights issue hiding in plain sight: there is no right to counsel in immigration court, and nearly half of immigrant New Yorkers are forced to represent themselves in complex legal proceedings. We train volunteers to support community members in understanding the law, preparing their cases, and moving through the system with greater clarity and dignity. Through this work, we build shared knowledge and collective defense. Our work is rooted in Brooklyn and open to community members across New York City.

As threats have escalated, we’ve moved fast. In response to Trump’s mass deportation agenda, we launched virtual hearing clinics, guardianship clinics, ICE check-in consultations, and a trial skills clinic where families prepare their own declarations and evidence and practice cross-examination. We partnered with accompaniment programs when ICE arrests came to the courts, with youth attorneys when federal funding for children was cut, and with local Haitian groups when Trump canceled TPS for Haitians. We are committed to community education across our borough for immigrants and allies alike, and we co-host the Pro Se Collaborative, a citywide network of advocates supporting self-representing immigrants.

Your support helps us grow our team and stand with more of our neighbors when it matters most.
