The Family Center

Rooted in Brooklyn. Here for Every New Yorker Who Needs Us.

For 32 years, The Family Center has been a lifeline for Brooklyn's most vulnerable families — delivering social, legal, mental health, and behavioral health services under one roof.  Today, you can find us at 493 Nostrand Avenue, at the corner of Fulton Street, in Bed-Stuy.

In 2025, we served over 2,100 New Yorkers — 95% Medicaid-eligible, 98% BIPOC, and more than 70% right here in Brooklyn.

Our impact speaks for itself:

--For the fourth year in a row, not one child in our care was removed from their home — no foster care, no detention. Every child stayed safely with their family.

--$3M+ secured in judgments, settlements, benefits, and savings for our clients — and for NYS taxpayers (through evictions and foster care stays prevented, etc.).

--Clients living with HIV experience lower viral loads, fewer hospitalizations, and better health outcomes through our care.

--Our family-based programs show statistically significant improvements in parental mental health and children's home environments.

--Last year alone, we trained nearly 100 New Yorkers in naloxone use through our Opioid Overdose Prevention Program.

The Family Center was born in the early ’90s when four women at NYC’s Division of AIDS Services saw Black and Latinx families devastated by the HIV/AIDS crisis — and decided to act. That founding commitment to equity, dignity, and comprehensive care still drives everything we do.

Today, our Bed-Stuy home includes an Article 31 mental health clinic for children and families and an Article 32 clinic for teens and adults facing substance misuse and severe mental health challenges.

Brooklyn residents deserve more than survival — they deserve to thrive. That's why we exist.
